Colchester Amateur Boxing Club was formed in 1959 by one founder member, Bill Ricketts Esq. The early HQ was located at Cavalry Barracks when the club had close links with the Army. When Security became a factor CABC moved onto a disused bakery (Co-Op) in Kendall Road where the Club had a strong membership, both at senior and junior levels. After many successful years, the tired building fell foul to the elements and a leaking roof forced the boxing club to relocate again. The club came close to extinction but survived with accommodation at Highwoods Sports Centre before obtaining facilities at the Wilson Marriage Centre. Many successful years were enjoyed here but the small size of the gym prevented any major growth and lead the club to relocate again in 2006 to SD School of Martial Arts. Here the club enjoyed an upsurge in membership and an increase in competitive boxers.

On 24/01/2010  when Zena Stephens qualified as the clubs first ever female Coach, a memorable milestone was reached. This shows the inclusive opportunities within CABC for all people to partake in boxing, coaching or volunteering within the sport.

In September 2011, Niamh Barton became the first female boxer to represent the club in competition with a winning debut at Colchester Utd FC. Captain Kem Izzet, having his testimonial dinner, presented trophies at the event. CABC hope to enter into a new era of partnering The U's for annual events.

Another major step was taken in the club's proud history when the end of September 2012 saw us open our own premises for the first time ever. The club now has its own identity, address and weekly timetable for the first time in our history. The development we have achieved was also recognised by the award of Sport England Clubmark recognising our high standards of operation.

Colchester ABC’s earliest known boxing coach is Mr Bob Lodge.
